Karma, the good, the bad, and the ugly

Do you believe in Karma? I do. Karma is based on belief. If you don’t believe in it, than it can’t affect you, blah, blah, blah. Well, I think it affects you whether you believe or not– we just tend to call it good luck instead of good karma or bad luck instead of bad karma.

Dictionary.com (one of my favorite places) has this to say:

kar ma
1. Hinduism, Buddhism. action, seen as bringing upon oneself inevitable results, good or bad, either in this life or in a reincarnation: in Hinduism one of the means of reaching Brahman.

2. Theosophy. the cosmic principle according to which each person is rewarded or punished in one incarnation according to that person’s deeds in the previous incarnation.

3. fate; destiny.

4. the good or bad emanations felt to be generated by someone or something.

I think what I am getting at is, be excellent to each other and yourself, and your karma will reward you.

To me karma sounds like wishful thinking; the classic ‘comeuppance’ of the bad guy getting his in the end and the good guy getting his rewards. Unfortunately, we live in a world where good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people all the time. That’s life. Also, we should not strive to be good people so that we can be ‘rewarded’ by ‘karma’, we should strive to be good people because it’s the right thing to do and it benefits our fellow man. That’s its own reward.

  • Hmmm. Maybe you just “think” they are good people and that bad things are happening to them, or vice versa.

And, yes you are right…we should strive to be good people and that should be it’s own reward, which is actually good karma.
